children with sparklers

Overview: What starts as fun entertainment can end in tragedy if you aren’t careful. Fireworks safety is important for keeping you, your family and your community safe. Remember these safety tips when handling fireworks or sparklers.

Fireworks safety tips

Sparklers are common for children to use, but did you know sparklers burn at about 2,000 degrees? That’s why it’s so important to follow these safety guidelines when sparklers or fireworks are involved, especially around children and pets.

Safety preparations for fireworks:

  • Make sure the fireworks you’re buying are legal in your area before using them.
  • Grab a bucket of water or hook up your garden hose before lighting fireworks in case of a fire.
  • Find protective eyewear for when you're lighting or watching fireworks in close range.
  • Pick out a safe place to light fireworks that is clear of houses or flammable materials. Make sure the surface is flat.
  • Make sure pets are inside and safe from where you’re lighting the fireworks.
  • Know where your closest emergency care is located.

Safety precautions when using fireworks:

  • Never allow young children to ignite fireworks, including sparklers.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Light fireworks one at a time and then back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting them.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Never light fireworks indoors.
  • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Don’t place fireworks in containers before lighting them.
  • Don’t be under the influence of alcohol or drugs when handling fireworks.
  • Don’t smoke while handling fireworks.

What to do after you’re done lighting fireworks:

  • Soak any used fireworks and sparklers in water for a few hours and throw them away.
  • Clean up any debris.

If a fire breaks out or someone is burned, call 911 immediately. While fireworks are a fun celebratory activity, don’t forget how dangerous they are, too.
