Dialysis uses a machine to pump blood through an artificial kidney for patients with kidney failure.
The machine cleanses the blood and removes excess fluid and waste products the way the kidneys would if they were functioning properly. Patients receive treatment as outpatients or during their hospital admissions.
Typically, dialysis involves four hours of treatment, three times a week.
