Donor Spotlight: Mark Miller
June 27, 2023Mark Miller is creating a lasting legacy in memory of his wife, Anne Miller (pictured right), while supporting the next generation of nursing students at Mercy College of Health Sciences. He is joined by more than 200 family members, friends, co-workers and anonymous donors with a goal of making a big impact.
Anne was an alumnus of the Mercy School of Nursing, now Mercy College, and served her entire nursing career at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. She came from a long line of nurses and truly loved the profession. She cherished the friendships she made through nursing and enjoyed helping people in any way she could.
“Anne really cared about other people and she was a good nurse,” said Mark. “Still to this day I hear stories on how she impacted others.”
After Anne passed, Mark established the Anne Miller Endowed Nursing Scholarship Fund at Mercy College to help current students achieve their dream of joining the nursing profession.
“Creating her scholarship fund just felt right to me,” said Mark. “This is something personal to Anne and it feels good knowing it will support the next generation of nurses.”
Mark has worked hard to grow the scholarship to help students in Anne’s name. Most recently, he held a garage sale with proceeds benefiting the scholarship. He is grateful for the generous support his has received for “Anne’s Scholarship.”
“I don’t think people know just how important their contribution can be,” said Mark. “It’s humbling to get this kind of support from so many people.”
The Anne Miller Endowed Nursing Scholarship Fund will support students entering in the final year of school. Currently, the scholarship has raised close to $58,000 thanks to a variety of generous donors. The first distribution of the scholarship will be for the 2023 winter semester.
Mercy College is committed to transforming students into successful health care professionals to care for our community. Mark hopes the students who receive this scholarship have the same passion for nursing that Anne did.
“Nursing is one of the most trusted professions and it is important to everyone,” said Mark. “There is such a storage of nurses and health care is vital for our community.”
Mark encourages others to consider contributing to the Anne Miller Endowed Nursing Scholarship Fund. Looking ahead, he hopes to grow the scholarship more to help as many students as possible.
“This scholarship is near to my heart,” said Mark. “I promised Anne that I would do my best to make sure she would be remembered. I know now I will do that through Mercy College and the future nurses this scholarship will support.”
“The Anne Miller Endowed Scholarship Fund is a lasting legacy for Anne that could go on for a long time, which is pretty cool,” said Mark.
