MercyOne Waterloo Outpatient Therapy
Your medical provider or your family’s provider may recommend outpatient therapy. This means you have an injury, disease or other condition that doesn’t need advanced care, but may get better with scheduled therapy visits. MercyOne specializes in three types of therapy:
- Physical therapy helps you regain strength and range of motion if you have lower back pain, a sprained ankle and other injuries. There are also therapies to help women experiencing pain or bladder leaking during and after pregnancy.
- Occupational therapy helps you get through your day safely and in less pain. Your provider may recommend occupational therapy if you have carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow or other kinds of pain bothering you at work or school.
- Speech language pathology (speech therapy) teaches communication skills related to speech, swallowing, and changes to how your brain and mouth function.
With some conditions, it’s important to start therapy early for the best results. If you’re having trouble seeing your primary care provider, or if you don’t have one, call us to request an appointment without a referral.
MercyOne Waterloo Inpatient Rehabilitation
- The three types of outpatient therapy (physical, occupational and speech therapies) are also available to hospitalized patients. Inpatient therapy can help you heal from traumatic injuries, like those caused by a car accident, as well as after surgeries like knee joint replacement. You might have more than one kind of therapist on your care team. A physical therapist helps you move on your own. Your occupational therapist prepares you to safely return to your daily life. A speech therapist may be necessary due to brain trauma. If your loved one has trouble swallowing because of a stroke, they will see a speech therapist.
