Special occasions and holiday parties can make following a bariatric surgery diet difficult. However, with a little planning and a few strategies in mind, you can still enjoy these occasions while making mindful choices for your well-being.
Bariatric diet at a restaurant
Here are a few steps to keep your bariatric diet at a restaurant.
- Reviewing the menu options ahead of time to know what options will work for you.
- When you arrive at the restaurant, don't be afraid to ask for special orders.
- Ask for dressings and condiments on the side, so you have control over the amount you use.
- Ensure that your food is made without any added butter, oil or fat.
- Avoid eating any rolls, bread or chips before the meal.
- Consider splitting a meal with a dining partner or sharing appetizers. Ask for a to-go container with your food and portion out the meal before you start eating.
Remember, restaurants are usually accommodating and willing to cater to your needs.
Wedding season diet tips
Weddings often serve foods and drinks you need to avoid. To stick to your diet during these events, try to focus on the social aspect rather than solely focusing on the food. Engage in conversations, catch up with friends and family, and participate in activities to keep yourself occupied.
Some venues may accommodate special requests or dietary restrictions. Reach out to the hosts or the wedding planner to inquire about options that suit your needs.
Holidays, parties and bariatric diet
Holidays happen year-round, but these tips can help you prepare no matter what season you’re in.
- Make sure you eat a balanced breakfast or lunch beforehand to avoid overeating.
- Consider bringing a dish to share that aligns with your dietary preferences.
- Watch your drink intake and avoid alcohol, caffeine and using a straw.
How can I offset heavy-eating days?
Reducing your daily caloric intake by two-thirds for a few days leading up to the holidays can help you maintain better control over your weight. By practicing portion control and getting accustomed to smaller serving sizes, you'll find yourself feeling satisfied more quickly on those days when you do indulge in bigger meals.
