Dr HughesMercyOne Neurologist Bruce Hughes, M.D. knows the importance of giving back and the impact a donation can make.

For more than 21 years, Dr. Hughes has contributed to multiple areas at MercyOne Des Moines including the scholarship program at Mercy College of Health Science, MercyOne House of Mercy and MercyOne Neurosurgery and Ruan Nuerology Care.

Many programs at MercyOne Des Moines are funded through philanthropy, including the MS Day Program at MercyOne Ruan Neurology Care. This program teaches patients living with multiple sclerosis (MS) how best to navigate their daily lives while living with the disease.

“These philanthropy-funded programs have a huge impact on the patients we see and clearly benefits their quality of life,” said Dr. Hughes.

“The programs we provide are necessary services, and without funding, they will go away and will not be able to create meaningful change.”

Philanthropy has also impacted Ruan Neurology Care by providing educational and professional advancement opportunities for colleagues as well as funding vital equipment.

“Giving back assists departments so they can provide the highest quality medical care to their patients.”

As a physician, Dr. Hughes already gives back so much of his time, energy and talent back to MercyOne and the patients he serves. He express that he feels it’s his duty to contribute back to MercyOne Des Moines because he knows he further supporting patients and the well-being of the community.

“For me, there is a sense of satisfaction to donating; that you are doing your part to give back to the community and to society in general,” said Dr. Hughes.

“The donor gets something out of it too!”
