Areas of Impact: Simulation Lab Project
September 29, 2022Health care is ever growing and innovating and simulation training aides in patient safety and satisfaction. Workforce shortage and aging population means the demand for skilled health care professionals is higher than ever.
For more than 40 years, MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center’s care teams have relied on simulation to train nurses, patient care technicians, residents and physicians, enabling them to act in real-time life-saving scenarios with the utmost precision, safety and coordination. A simulation lab is designed to provide an immersive learning experience which enhances overall patient care.
Simulation training is also a big component in residency education. MercyOne offers a one year Nurse Residency Program and has one of only three accredited surgical residency programs in the state of Iowa.
“Research proves that simulation enhances resident learning,” said Joan Beard, Director of Nursing Education at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center. “The benefits of simulation for procedural competence and team training allow learners to experience rare or potentially dangerous situations in a safe environment.”
“A simulation lab helps target skills and behaviors that are difficult to acquire through traditional training and in turn improve patient safety and reduce patient risk.”
Currently at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, our high-fidelity simulation manikins are located throughout the hospital in small rooms, which are not optimal for a team approach or long-term training of staff.
Donations to the Simulation Lab Project will create a central, state-of-the-art simulation lab designed to provide an immersive learning experience for our colleagues to provide the highest level of patient care and safety. It will be comprised of four simulation labs, one simulation OR and updated equipment. This needed update will increase patient, nurse and unit satisfaction and enhance patient safety through hands-on simulation training.
