Preparing for your neuropsychology appointment

How long is the neuropsychological evaluation appointment?

When you arrive at the clinic for your appointment, you will be provided some paperwork to complete before seeing the neuropsychologist. Before testing begins, the neuropsychologist will conduct a 30–45-minute clinical interview to learn more about your concerns. Testing will begin after the interview. There will be a variety of paper and pencil, and computer-based, tests that assess your cognitive functions and mood.

The evaluation can range from a relatively brief assessment (two hours) to a comprehensive evaluation that can last four or more hours. The length of the examination is dependent on the nature of the referral. After testing is complete, the neuropsychologist will review the results and will then meet with you to provide their impression. A written report will be generated and shared with the referring physician.

What should be brought to your evaluation appointment?

  • Eyeglasses, hearing aids, snack or drinks.
  • A current list of ALL medications, doses and supplements.
  • It is helpful, although not required, that a relative or friend accompany you to the interview in order to gain an additional perspective.
  • Results of any previous diagnostic testing (e.g., brain scans such as CT or MRI scans) and/or results from previous neuropsychological evaluations if completed at another hospital or institution.
  • Results of prior neuropsychological and psychological evaluations.
  • For school-aged patients, please bring copies of prior school evaluations, Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or 504 plans.
