Do I need joint replacement?
Joint replacement surgery swaps out your damaged joint with a replica of a healthy joint made from metal, plastic or ceramics. When you’re changing your life to fit around your joint pain, it’s a sign to speak with your health care team about treatment. Other signs it may be time to consider treatment include:
- Change of joint shape.
- Loss of motion in joint.
- Clicking, grinding or snapping sounds at joint.
- Painful movement.
- Severe pain.
There are treatment options for joint pain before surgery. Joint replacement is recommended when nonsurgical treatments have not worked.
Knee replacement surgery
Knee replacement surgery is a surgical procedure to replace some or all your knee joint. Your orthopedic surgeon replaces damaged cartilage and bone with an artificial joint to mimic a healthy joint.
Types of knee replacement
- Total knee replacement replaces all three areas of your knee joint – under your kneecap (patellofemoral), outside (lateral) and the inside (medial).
- Partial knee replacement only replaces some areas of your knee joint. Partial knee replacement is usual if only one or two areas of your knee are severely damaged.
Hip replacement surgery
Hip replacement surgery replaces a severely damaged hip joint. Some of or all your damaged hip is swapped with a prosthetic hip joint.
Types of hip replacement
- Total hip replacement is the most common form of hip replacement surgery. The top of your thigh bone (femoral head) and its socket (acetabulum are fully replaced with a prosthetic joint. Almost all hip replacement surgeries are total hip replacements.
- Partial hip replacement is less common and only done to repair certain types of injuries like a broken hip or to remove certain tumors.
