Voice Clinic
Most people take their voices for granted-until they have difficulty speaking. Voice disorders can dramatically impact the life of the sufferer, and they are often difficult to treat.
The Voice Clinic at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center specializes in these difficult problems.
"Vocal disorder diagnosis is difficult. We are not simply able to pigeonhole the problem and pull the magic cure off the shelf. Successful treatment requires a team approach," says Dr. David Wagner of MercyOne Siouxland's Voice Clinic. Wagner emphasizes that the mission of the Voice Clinic extends beyond treating voice disorders and includes educational outreach for vocal wellness.
The Voice Clinic pecializes in treating patients with:
- Hoarseness
- Rough voice
- Soft voice
- Breathiness
- Difficulty or inability to maintain pitch
- Voice breaks
- Fatigue after speaking or singing for long periods of time
- Low volume voice related to Parkinson's Disease--treated using the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) approach, an innovative and clinically proven method for improving voice and speech in individuals with Parkinson's Disease.
Symptoms of a voice problem are potentially serious and their cause cannot be determined simply by the way they sound. These disorders could be something relatively mundane or could be as serious as voice box cancer. Therefore a person experiencing difficulty should be evaluated promptly.
The Voice Clinic staff will perform a physical exam and specialized tests to determine the nature and extent of the problem. Following this complete evaluation, the specially trained speech therapy staff will design a treatment plan specifically tailored to the individual's needs with the goal of voice restoration.
If you or someone you love has a voice disorder, turn to the voice care professionals at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center. Outpatient speech therapy services are available at MercyOne Mondays through Fridays, with flexible scheduling times.
