Dr. Althaus is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon who has returned to Sioux City to begin practice. He completed a fellowship with the Insall Scott Kelly Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in New York City where he learned state of the art techniques for the management of injuries and arthritic conditions involving the hip, knee, and shoulder. He has experience with all of the common approaches to the hip including the direct anterior, lateral, and posterior. At ISK, he worked with some of the best knee surgeons in the country and was exposed to the philosophy and legacy of Dr. John Insall, who is regarded as the father of knee replacement surgery. During fellowship he received additional training in shoulder reconstruction, rotator cuff, and labral surgery as well as hip arthroscopy for the treatment of labral tears and hip impingement.
While in residency at the University of Kansas Hospital, Dr. Althaus was able to acquire a broad knowledge of the surgical and non-surgical management of many orthopedic conditions. This is demonstrated by his performance on standardized exams during training including scoring in the 99th percentile on the Orthopedic In-Training Exam and the 96th percentile on the written portion of the orthopedic board exam.
Dr. Althaus and his wife are both natives of Sioux City and are excited to be back. They are busy with two young boys and enjoy spending time with family and friends. They hope to be able to find time to do some golfing in the summer.
