“When you see a patient struggling and you’re the one to help fix it, that’s the most rewarding thing to see.” Every day Kuldeep Bharat Shah, MD, FACC is able to make a difference at MercyOne Siouxland Heart and Vascular Center. As an electrophysiologist, he focuses on abnormal heart rhythms.
Originally from India, Dr. Shah comes from a long lineage of businessmen and was the first in his family to go to medical school. He attended the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences in Karad, India. He competed his internal medicine residency at Charleston Area Medical Center in West Virginia. He then completed a cardiology fellowship at West Virginia University and an EP fellowship at Beaumont Hospital in Michigan.
“I love to ask questions and learn. Electrophysiology is like solving a puzzle and it can sometimes get complicated but it’s beautiful. In the lab, when I can identify the exact mechanism of the arrhythmia and eliminate it, is when it’s truly rewarding.”
Dr. Shah says the best part about his job is making a difference, whether that’s in the clinic or in the electrophysiology lab.
“I get to make a real change every day. Maybe it’s a patient who can only walk a few flights of stairs and now after their procedure they can walk four or more. Or it’s a patient that has suffered and survived a cardiac arrest and we help to prevent future ones. It’s so amazing to get to be a part of that.” Dr. Shah is passionate about caring for heart failure, AFIB and arrhythmias. He performs major procedures including Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) ablations, pace makers, cardiac resynchronization therapy and leadless pacemakers.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and playing some complex and strategic board games.
