A desire to serve others. That’s what fuels Tonja Winekauf, MSN, ARNP-C every day she comes to work at MercyOne. It’s also what fueled her into serving her country.
Tonja currently serves in the Iowa Air National Guard as Lieutenant Colonel. She was also in the Army Reserves. She says this background and experience helps her better serve her patients.
“It helps me to connect more quickly to those who have served and those who are currently serving,” she said. “Military medicine is unique in itself and I am able to recognize the needs of those individuals and adjust the plan of care to suit their military needs.” Her background also makes her excited for MercyOne’s Military and Veterans Health Care.
“It is vitally important we recognize the diverse needs that these men, women and their families face. It’s also important to know how their experiences have affected their overall health and created unique health care needs.”
Tonja graduated from the University of Iowa in the Family Nurse Practitioner Program. Before graduating, she spent most of her time in critical care, dialysis and renal transplant. Since graduating, she’s focused her career in rural health care and with veterans.
For Tonja, coming to work at MercyOne means being a part of a team.
“It’s so important that we create these positive experiences for patients,” she said. “In turn, that creates positive patient outcomes. It’s something I feel MercyOne makes a top priority and it’s why I wanted to work here.”
Tonja is excited to provide you with exceptional, personalized care. In her free time, Tonja is active in the Siouxland community including organizations like Siouxland Leadership, Iowa Genealogy, the Iowa National Guard, and is a Siouxland Sharks Board Member.
