Services
MercyOne Occupational Health provides support from the initial process of identifying essential job functions to designing protocols to test those job functions with the goal of minimizing the risk of work-related injuries. In the event of an injury, our team will diagnose, treat, and manage the injury as well as educate the employee to reduce possible re-injury.
Post-offer, annual exams, medical surveillance
- Physical exams, DOT physicals, respirator physicals
- Drug and alcohol screening
- Pulmonary function testing
- Hearing testing
- Lab testing, vaccinations, TB testing
- Physical performance testing to determine baseline physical capacity and ability to perform essential job functions
Work Injury Treatment
- Primary injury care (musculoskeletal, foreign body in eye, chemical exposures, sutures, etc.)
- Case management
- On-site physical therapy services plus access to physical therapists with extensive experience in work-related injuries at six additional MercyOne Physical Therapy in the Des Moines area.
- Work conditioning/work hardening
- Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs): Also known as a Functional Capacity Exam, this series of tests determines an individual’s physical capabilities to perform specific job functions. The results of the FCE are typically weighed against the Department of Labor and the definitions of occupational title standards of sedentary, light, medium and heavy.

- Job site analysis: review of employer’s current job descriptions and interviews human resources and business partner representatives regarding the current job demands. Observes/videotapes jobs that are being analyzed. Works with employer to determine essential functions of the job, then objectively measures those functions, develops a quantitative job demands analysis and presents to the employer.
- Ergonomic assessments: standard survey of ergonomics on the job site used generally for office-type positions.
- Complex ergonomic assessments: standard survey including specific recommendations for equipment, exercise, and/or job adjustment changes with the goal of injury reduction. Performed by a physical therapist. More complex than a simple workstation assessment.
