A Story From Addiction to Recovery
September 23, 2020Katie was referred to House of Mercy shortly after she sent to the emergency room at MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center due to heart and liver failure from substance and alcohol use.
“I have been a drug addict since I was twelve years old and drugs almost took out my life,” said Katie.
Katie joined House of Mercy’s residential program and started working toward recovery. She realized she needed to change, not just for herself, but for her children
“House of Mercy completely changed my life,” said Katie. “They transformed me from an isolated drug addict into a self-sufficient mom who is going to school and actually living life.”
Katie is currently studying at Mercy College of Health Sciences to become a nurse like the one who saved her life.
“I am able to see Katie’s life and the lives of so many clients transform through the services offered at House of Mercy,” said Director of House of Mercy, Rebecca Peterson. “What’s so powerful about Katie’s story is that it gives us all hope that people can change and people can recover.”
Katie is grateful for the compassionate, personalize care and support she received at House of Mercy and is looking forward to helping others as a nurse.
