Diabetes Services to Help Manage Your Care
Have you recently been diagnosed with diabetes? Are you asking yourself, "Now what?" Each year, 1.5 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes. Being diagnosed with diabetes may be a shock, but an important first step is to find the education and support system you need to go on living your best life through services and programs offered by MercyOne in Northeast Iowa.
In Northeast Iowa, the MercyOne Diabetes Education Program offers educational resources, consultation and classes to help you successfully manage your diabetes and reduce complications. With experts located in Waterloo, Cedar Falls and Oelwein, MercyOne provides education services you need at your convenience.
Education
Recognized by the American Diabetes Association as a high-quality diabetes program, MercyOne diabetes classes are instructed by registered dietitians and registered nurses who have additional training in diabetes management and are certified diabetes educators.
The Diabetes Education Care program focuses on:
- Understanding the basics of diabetes
- Self-monitor of blood glucose
- Insulin pump therapy
- Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM)
- Medication management - insulin and oral agents
- Behavior modification
- Appropriate exercise
- Proper nutrition
- Meal planning
- Preventing diabetes complications
- Motivating yourself to live well
- Healthy habits for your feet, skin and eyes
- Gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)
- Community resources
Medical Nutrition Therapy
Individualized nutrition recommendations are developed by a Registered Dietitian to select the best amounts and types of foods for your medical condition. Meal planning guides and resources to guide you in making the food selections will be provided.
Nutrition therapy can treat or control conditions including:
- Celiac disease
- Fructose intolerance
- Elevated cholesterol
- High blood pressure
- Metabolic syndrome
- Pre-diabetes
Get a referral
To participate in the program, a referral is required from you doctor. From there, our certified educators will work with your medical team to obtain background and medication information. You will work with educators to set goals and develop your treatment goals
