Interventional Radiology
Interventional radiology (IR) is a minimally invasive way for us to help better diagnose, and even treat, diseases and injuries. Interventional radiology treatment can be life-saving. Most IR procedures require just a few tiny incisions in place of major surgery. This allows you to get better faster, with less pain, scarring, and risk for infection.
Diagnostic Radiology
MercyOne offers a full and comprehensive service line for all diagnostic imaging procedures. From general x-rays, to fluoroscopic imaging and barium studies, all are performed by compassionate and caring technologists and highly specialized radiologists.
Lung Cancer Screening
Are you at risk for lung cancer? Take our quiz to find out if you are eligible for a lung cancer screening.
Low-dose computerized tomography (CT) lung cancer screening helps reduce death from lung cancer through early detection. Testing is available at MercyOne Waterloo Cancer Center, Cedar Falls Medical Center and Oelwein Medical Center.
Medicare and most private insurers cover lung cancer screening once per year if you meet the following criteria:
- Are asymptomatic.
- Between the ages of 50 and 80 and are a current smoker or quit smoking within the last 15 years.
- Have a tobacco smoking history of at least 20 pack-years or:
- If you have smoked 1 pack per day for the last 20 years = 20 pack years.
- If you have smoked 1 ½ packs per day x 13.5 years = 20.25 pack years.
Please contact your primary care provider to find out if you qualify for screening.
Breast Care
Breast cancer is serious, yet easier to detect if you are faithful to self-breast exams and yearly mammograms. Click here for more information about MercyOne Waterloo Breast Center.
Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine uses very small amounts of radioactive material (called radiotracers or radiopharmaceuticals) to diagnose disease and other defects inside the body.
Vein & Vascular Care
Vascular disease is among the leading causes of death in the United States often shows no symptoms. MercyOne offers a comprehensive management clinic for patients with Chronic Venous Disease, Peripheral Venous Disease (PVD) and Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) in order to treat these conditions in their early stages.
Bone Density Testing
Bone density testing is used to assess the strength of the bones and the probability of fracture in persons at risk for osteoporosis. The test is a simple, noninvasive procedure that takes just minutes. Bone density testing can help your health care provider confirm a diagnosis of osteoporosis even in its earliest stages, so treatment can begin sooner. In addition, when repeated over time, it can be used to monitor your rate of bone loss and can help your health care provider monitor your response to treatment. At MercyOne we provide the most accurate test available for detecting osteoporosis and other bone diseases. The DEXA (dual-energy x-ray absorpitometry) scan takes about 10 to 15 minutes and measures the bone loss in your hips and spine. The DEXA scan is similar to having a standard x-ray with only a very small amount of radiation being used. Talk to your health care provider about your risks of developing osteoporosis.
Coronary Calcium Scoring
Calcium scoring is one of the most advanced methods available to detect heart disease in its earliest stages. Calcium scoring uses noninvasive, high-speed computed tomography (CT) to scan your heart and detect calcium deposits along the walls of arteries. The test then produces a “score” that identifies the number and locations of any calcium deposits. Taking into account other factors such as age, family history and cholesterol level, your cardiologist uses the calcium score to measure your risk for heart disease.
Positron Emission Testing (PET/CT – PET)
PET/CT is an innovative imaging technique which focuses on the metabolic changes present in many types of cancers. Merging PET with CT in the same scanning process combines the best of both technologies and allows physicians to both identify and localize cancer cells with great accuracy. PET/CT scanning is offered on-site at MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center.
