Wound Care Clinic

Do you or someone you know have a wound, ulcer or open sore that just won’t heal or keeps coming back? MercyOne’s wound care clinic in Waterloo offers specialized treatment for these hard to treat wounds, ulcers and sores. Patients are treated by a team of wound care experts, including physicians and certified wound/ostomy nurses (CWON), working together to find the cause of the problem, treat it, and help prevent future problems.

These hard-to-treat sores, ulcers and open wounds can be caused by poor circulation, venous insufficiency, lymphedema, diabetes, pressure (lying in one position for too long), genetics, malignancy, inflammatory diseases, infections, certain medications and/or other medical problems. Wound Care specializes in the treatment of many different types of non-healing wounds. Some are acute and complicated by infection or other problems that interfere with the healing process. Others are chronic and may not have responded to prior healing therapies. Some wounds are recurrent due to underlying medical conditions.

To aid and speed healing, our caring staff will develop a wound care plan that involves the evaluation and treatment of the existing wounds. State of the art therapies including Mist Ultrasound, bio-engineered dermal grafts and scientific topical dressings are utilized. Whenever possible and appropriate, the patient will be educated on how to prevent future wounds.

The certified wound/ostomy nurses specialize in the care of people with fecal and urinary ostomies. They can help with pre-operative teaching and stoma marking, teaching self-care during the inpatient stay, and outpatient care of peristomal and pouching complications. CWON’s facilitate confidence during these transitions.

The Wound Care Clinic is not the only place you will find the wound care staff. You can find them evaluating and treating patients on the floors at Waterloo Medical Center, Cedar Falls Medical Center, and Oelwein Medical Center for wounds, ostomies, and peristomal skin problems.
