Gifts of Grain
Farmers play a vital role in the health of North Iowa. At MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, we're committed to exceptional rural medicine and providing you and your neighbors with the highest quality care, close to home. Now there's a convenient way for you to share in our mission.
By donating grain to MercyOne North Iowa Foundation, you can directly support the health of our community. It's a way to share the fruits of your labor and help us provide the world-class care that truly sets apart our rural community.
How Does It Work?
- Contact the MercyOne North Iowa Foundation at 641-428-7743 or northiowafoundation@mercyhealth.com to ensure you take the proper steps to make your gift.
- Deliver the grain to your elevator or co-op and tell them you wish to transfer ownership to the MercyOne North Iowa Foundation. Request a grain storage receipt showing the MercyOne North Iowa Foundation as the owner. The elevator should refrain from selling the grain or issuing a check to the foundation without specific instructions from the foundation.
- Notify MercyOne North Iowa Foundation when the transfer is made, indicating where the grain is being stored. The Foundation will order the sale of the grain. Following the sale, the foundation will acknowledge your gift.
Benefits of Donating Grain
- For farm operators, gifting grain can provide a larger tax benefit than selling the grain and making a gift from the proceeds. Contributing grain may allow you to avoid the sale of the commodity as income while still deducting production costs, thus reducing taxable income and supporting your health care priorities in North Iowa.
- Consult your tax professional about your specific situation before making any gifts of grain commodities.
