“MercyOne Des Moines pharmacy department is an integral part of the high quality, compassionate care we strive to provide for our patients. Our staff and pharmacy specialists provide leadership within our institutions by ensuring and monitoring medication safety and stewardship. The pharmacy residency creates an important added dimension to a department already steeped in an academic approach to pharmacotherapeutics. MercyOne Des Moines pharmacist and pharmacy residents are completely integrated into our medical team, working side by side with physicians, nurses and the rest of the interdisciplinary team. The Pharmacists at Mercyone Des Moines are second to none, a true asset to our patients”

“MercyOne is a healthcare leader within Iowa, and our success is based on excellent physicians and clinical pharmacists. Our clinical pharmacists work daily within multidisciplinary teams to advise on the selection of medication, the optimal dose, and the best route of administration for individual patients. They provide information about potential side effects, assist with the acute management of a host of critical conditions, and ongoing evaluation of a treatment's efficacy! With key physician leaders, our pharmacists develop and manage hospital-wide medication management policies and guidelines. They have active voices nationally within Trinity Health, assisting in the evaluation and decision to introduce novel medications and the ongoing review of the use of all approved drugs and medicines used as part of any clinical trials. I cannot imagine being a first class healthcare organization without our clinical pharmacists!”

“The pharmacy residents have been a delight to work with. They regularly provide education and insight to us as well as bringing thoughtful pharmaceutical recommendations to the table. We welcome their contribution!”

“Working and collaborating with our emergency pharmacy residents is a true joy. They are an integral part of our team — working at the bedside along with physicians, nurses and staff — to deliver timely life-saving care. A typical day may include pediatric resuscitation, trauma alerts, sepsis alerts, stroke alerts, overdose consultations, and adult resuscitations. And like our entire team, the pharmacy residents are present at the bedside providing evidence-based, timely care.”

Sydney Leach MD
Co-Medical Director, Emergency Department

“Pharmacy residents and clinical pharmacists are an integral part of patient care. They collaborate with physicians and provide guidance regarding drug interactions and potential toxicity of medications. Residents work closely with clinical pharmacists during their training and assist with appropriate renal and hepatic dosing of antimicrobials and other medications. They review daily labs especially when hepatotoxic and nephrotoxic medications are prescribed and follow up with culture data to ensure appropriate choice of antimicrobials. Pharmacy residents are actively involved and contribute to various committees across the organization besides Pharmacy and Therapeutics and Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee. Their contribution and efforts in improving patient care is invaluable. We ensure they gain the necessary experience and develop intellectually to become future pharmacy leaders.

The dedication, expertise and collaboration with pharmacists is imperative for care of our oncology patients. The constant communication, the second and sometimes third eyes on doses, has ensured not only positive but safe outcomes. There are so many potential interactions with chemotherapy and we are so blessed to have a pharmacy team that is always looking out for the well being of our patients. The pharmacy residents have been great to work with and they provide a perspective that contributes a lot to patient care.
