Depression:

Depression is a common mental disorder, causes of which could be genetic, biological, environmental and psychological. Risk factors for depression include any family history of depression, major life changes, and stress.

Signs and Symptoms of depression

  • Feeling persistently sad or empty
  • Feeling hopeless, worthless or helpless
  • Irritability
  • Loss of interest
  • Low energy
  • Restless
  • Appetite and weight fluctuation
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Treatments for depression

Depression is treatable. Some common treatments include talk therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy (IPT) and problem solving therapy. There are medications that can help with treating depression. Some people choose to utilize both medication and talk therapy to help treat their depression. Other ways to help treat depression include

  • Exercise and being active.           
  • Try to be social and not become isolated.                           
  • Educate yourself about depression.           
  • Get outside.                                                      
  • Find a trusted friend or family member to talk with.

Burnout:

Signs and symptoms of burnout include

  • Being cynical at work                 
  • Irritability        
  • Lacking energy 
  • Trouble concentrating

Measuring burnout

The most common measurement of burnout is the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). You can find a MBI survey on the Vital Worklife app. From the apps homepage click on assessments in the upper left-hand corner. Then click on the Maslach Burnout Inventory part 1, 2 and 3. The results are confidential and for your use only.

Mindfulness and meditation practices have been shown to reduce stress, boost working memory, improve focus, lower emotional reactivity, improve cognitive flexibility and create healthier relationships.
