Program Director Welcome

Program Director's Note

I am thrilled to introduce you to the MercyOne Des Moines Family Medicine Residency Program where we are dedicated to developing compassionate, skilled family physicians.

As you explore our webpage, you’ll find a program that is more than just a place to learn—it is a community focused on mentorship, collaboration, and excellence in patient care. We take pride in our culture of respect and innovation and look forward to potentially welcoming you to our team.

Established in 1997, MercyOne Des Moines Family Medicine Residency has proudly graduated over 200 family medicine residents who have gone on to work in diverse settings. We combine the personalized attention of a community program with the extensive resources of a tertiary care center. Residents build close relationships with specialists and have many elective options, ensuring a well-rounded and comprehensive training experience.

You will receive robust obstetrics training with hands-on C-section opportunities and collaboration with OB-GYN colleagues.  Here, residents also gain experience handling complex cases in the hospital setting, including 3 months of inpatient pediatric care.  We emphasize rural medicine, offering opportunities at established rural sites, and provide point-of care ultrasound training.

Our continuity clinic, in partnership with Primary Health Care, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), provides residents with a wide range of clinical experiences caring for the underserved in our community.

At MercyOne Des Moines, you will find a very close-knit and supportive resident community, with a couple's match friendly approach. Des Moines is a vibrant city with plenty of opportunities and amenities for both young professionals and families, making it an ideal place for personal and professional growth now and in the future.

Our graduates are well-equipped to pursue any career path they choose, thanks to our comprehensive education.  We believe MercyOne Des Moines offers exceptional training, mentorship, and a dynamic community.  We are excited about the possibility of you joining us and discovering for yourself what our program has to offer.

Thank you for considering MercyOne Des Moines for your residency training. We look forward to the opportunity to support you in reaching your full potential.
