Student Opportunities

Family Medicine Clerkship

MercyOne Northeast Iowa Family Medicine & Residency offers the 3rd or 4th year medical student an opportunity to spend two (2) to four (4) weeks in the clinic. (For interested students, the option exists to spend time in the local hospital as well.) The objectives of the clerkship are that the student will:

  1. Understand the basic concepts of Family Medicine, including the importance of health maintenance, continuity of care, and family dynamics
  2. Acquire experience in the management of both hospitalized (optional) and ambulatory care patients.
  3. Acquire ability to develop management plans for acute and chronic problems at various levels of care.
  4. Acquire experience in the appropriate use of hospital outpatient facilities for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

These objectives will be achieved through:

  1. Participation in the care of patients of the MercyOne Northeast Iowa Family Medicine & Residency, with Faculty or Resident physician supervision.
  2. Participation in the admission, diagnosis, and treatment of selected hospitalized patients, to include their post-hospitalization follow up.
  3. Experience in office laboratory, behavioral science, and practice management.
  4. Observation of colposcopy, OB ultrasound, excision of lesions and other office surgical procedures at the Northeast Iowa Family Medicine & Residency.
  5. Optional attendance at obstetrical deliveries available 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
  6. Attendance at all appropriate scheduled conferences.

A room and daily meal allowance will be provided at the hospital at no cost to the student.

Sub Internship

Northeast Iowa Medical Education Foundation and MercyOne Northeast Iowa Family Medicine & Residency, 2055 Kimball Avenue, Waterloo, IA 50702

OBJECTIVE:

This course will emphasize the inpatient aspects of key components of family medicine, including:

  1. continuity of care;
  2. integration of health care in the local community;
  3. caring for entire families and caring for patients through the lifespan;
  4. patient education and prevention.

GOALS:

  1. Serve as a member of the Family Residency Inpatient Team at Unity Point Health - Allen Hospital and  MercyOne Waterloo Medical Center with responsibility for initial assessment of patients in the ERs, or sent from the FPC for direct admissions, including obtaining complete history, physical exam, and developing a differential diagnosis and strategy for prudent diagnostic testing.
  2. Apply and improve his/her skills of assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of patients with illnesses commonly seen by family physicians.
  3. Develop evaluation and communication skills by presenting patients and doing occasional clinical presentations at morning teaching sessions.

STUDENT EXPECTATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Be supervised by the MercyOne Northeast Iowa Family Medicine & Residency Team Chief Resident, other licensed members of the Team and the rounding and on-call faculty physicians.
  2. * Any document requiring signature, including discharge summaries, progress notes and orders, must have a co signature by a licensed, supervising physician. Co-signatures will occur in real time. Student will observe and assist the responsible physician/s consistent with his/her privileges and the medical staff bylaws.
  3. Follow 2 -5 patients daily in the hospital, writing progress notes, and managing the patients with supervision.
  4. Dictate discharge summaries.
  5. Take first call approximately every 4th night with the Chief Resident as back-up and have 1-2 days off each week (to be arranged by the Chief Resident).
  6. Follow patients from their admission through their discharge.
  7. Have an opportunity to work with patients in two community hospitals.
  8. Have an opportunity to participate in deliveries.
  9. Participate in weekly didactic conference at the Northeast Iowa Family Medicine & Residency.
  10. May perform a history and physical examination, but the attending shall also perform this examination and dictate the findings of his/her examinations.

Students interested in this rotation must be interested in the specialty of Family Medicine. Prior approval from the Program is required.

Special Conditions:

Transportation is required. A daily meal allowance in the hospital are provided at no charge to the student. Students must be free of other obligations during this time period. Students must provide a record of immunizations and health screening as well as any other documents that may be required by the participating hospitals.

For the qualified medical student, we can arrange a variety of elective rotations for you ranging from one(1) to four(4) weeks in length.

Rotations chosen include (but not limited to)

  • Neurology
  • Anesthesia
  • Cardiology

CBPCC

Year round, MercyOne Northeast Iowa Family Medicine & Residency coordinates a four (4) week core rotation for 3rd year medical students at University of Iowa, Carver School of Medicine called a Community Based Primary Care Clerkship (CBPCC). We also offer a summertime MECO Clerkship for the medical student who has completed their first year of school.
