Speech therapy is focused on helping individuals with communication skills to facilitate functional interaction within the community. In addition to communication skills, speech therapy plays an integral role in identifying safe diet and swallowing guidelines for individuals with dysphagia. A MercyOne speech-language pathologist will work with you to assess speech, language, cognition and swallowing skills in order to develop an individualized treatment plan to meet your goals. Speech therapy is available at Cedar Falls Medical Center, Oelwein Medical Center and Waterloo Medical Center. Speech therapy services include treatment of:

  • Aphasia
  • Apraxia
  • Dysarthria
  • Voice disorders
  • Cognitive impairments
  • Dysphagia
  • Augmentative communication

Early developmental intervention: Families who have a child with a developmental delay or disability can face many challenges. The MercyOne early developmental intervention (EDI) program recognizes these challenges and has pediatric-trained professionals dedicated to help each child communicate, play, learn and live life to the fullest. EDI is a family-centered program. Parents and other family members are welcome to attend treatment sessions and are taught exercises and activities to work on with their child at home. Family support is important to help each child do their best.
