General Information
Radiologic Technology is the art and science of the administration of diagnostic and therapeutic radiological modalities under the direction of a physician in the detection and treatment of diseases, evaluation of broken bones and detection of other physiologic conditions. Ionizing radiation and other forms of imaging are used in research, industry and other areas of medicine.
The revolution in technology and complexity of the equipment, plus the demand for properly educated personnel have contributed to the rapid growth in the profession.
MercyOne North Iowa School of Radiologic Technology is committed to a curriculum that provides students with the knowledge, performance skills and professional behaviors to enable them to perform the major tasks typically required of an entry level radiographer. This program is 6 terms, including 2 summer sessions, beginning the third week of August and lasting approximately 22.5 months. Students may spend up to 40 hours per week in the program, which includes both clinical and academic time.
During the program, the student will attend clinical practice approximately 5 weekends and approximately 11 weeks of evening hours. MercyOne - North Iowa is a Level II trauma hospital.
Our curriculum meets requirements to take the ARRT National Registry certification exam and obtain State of Iowa Permit to Practice (licensure) once the National Registry Exam is passed. Students who are already enrolled or accepted in the pre-radiology program at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) are NOT automatically enrolled in our program at Mercy. If you are interested in our program, you must apply and interview for consideration to be accepted. Enrollment in NIACC's pre-radiology program does not guarantee placement in our program.
The application and 2 reference forms are available to print from this website. We hold several information sessions about the profession and our school several times throughout the year at the hospital. Please check the information session page for dates and times. All applicants must attend one information session as part of the application process.
For those meeting the minimum application requirements listed on the Application Information and Requirements the following must be submitted by January15th to be considered for an interview for the class beginning the following Fall:
- Completed application form
- Official transcripts (high school and college(s) attended)
- $20 non-refundable application fee
- Two recommendation forms
- Information session attendance
- ACT scores (if not on high school transcript)
First-round interviews are held in January, with selection by March, for the class beginning in August. Applicants not selected, who wish to be considered for the following year, must re-apply. There is NO waiting list. This includes applicants chosen as alternate candidates who do no start the program in that year.
The hospital does NOT have dormitory facilities.

We recommend that all students carry medical insurance while they are in School. Students are not covered by any hospital plans or Worker's Compensation.
Free parking is provided in employee lots.
Students may make use of the hospital library for study purposes or reference materials. The library is available 24 hours a day.
