PET-CT

Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (PET/CT) is a nuclear medicine technique which produces a three-dimensional image or map of functional processes in the body. The system detects pairs of gamma rays emitted indirectly by a positron-emitting radionuclide tracer, which is introduced into the body intravenously. Concentrations of the tracer occur in tissues that have a high metabolic activity rate, such as cancer. PET images are fused with CT images that occur in secession of the PET scan within the same machine. Overlapping the PET and CT images aids in the diagnosis of the scan.
