Nuclear Medicine
Nuclear medicine procedures use pharmaceuticals that have been labeled with radioactivity. The radiopharmaceuticals are administered to the patient intravenously, subdermally or orally in pill form. The radiation that is emitted is detected and imaged with gamma cameras. Nuclear imaging can also be referred to as radionuclide imaging or nuclear scintigraphy. Nuclear medicine differs from most other imaging modalities in that the tests primarily show the physiological function of the system being investigated as opposed to traditional anatomical imaging such as CT, MRI, ultrasound or general X-rays.
The following nuclear medical procedures are offered at MercyOne:
- Bone Scan
- Thyroid Uptake Scan
- HIDA (Gallbladder) Scan
- Renogram (Kidney Scan)
- Cardiolite Stress Test
- Nuclear Voiding Cystogram
