Medical Student Rotation Opportunities

MercyOne North Iowa serves as a third year core site for medical students at Des Moines University. DMU students complete a 1-month Internal Medicine rotation working with the Internal Medicine teaching service

Rotation Overview

  • 5 days per week. Medical students may not exceed 80 hours/week.
  • Students will learn how to present patients on general rounds and will work with the residents to form an accurate assessment and diagnosis for the patient as well as a treatment plan
  • Students are expected to give a short end of the month presentation on the topic of their choice
  • Students will learn to present patients at morning report
  • Students are given the day off prior to their shelf exam for additional study time

 

Internal Medicine sub-internship/Audition rotations for fourth year students

This rotation is open to all fourth-year students interested in a residency in Internal Medicine and auditioning at our program. An audition rotation is not required to apply to our program. However, it is a great way to get to know our program and see if it is a good fit for you.

     Key features:

  • Will accept students for 2-4 week rotations
  • Sub-interns will essentially functions as 1st year resident. They will learn key presentation skills, assessment skills, and learn to form a confident treatment plan for their patients, while working under the supervision of senior residents and attendings.
  • Sub-interns will be expected to manage 3-4 patients by the end of the rotation
  • 6 days per week schedule with flexibility if time off is needed for interviews
  • Opportunity to rotate in our outpatient clinic for ½ day to work with our clinic staff and program director
  • Opportunity to collaborate with residents for posters and/or case report publications
