Luke Espelund, MD, FAAM, FAAP, is a pediatric emergency physician at the MercyOne Des Moines Pediatric Emergency Care.
“Simply put, I like to help make kids feel better when they are sick or injured,” Luke said. “I love helping others and I love children, so what better career to choose than pediatric emergency medicine!”
Luke received his medical degree from the University of Iowa Medical School and completed a five-year combined residency with Indiana University in pediatrics and emergency medicine. His clinical interests include pediatric sedation, wound care and laceration repair and fracture care.
“I did not think about going into medicine until high school,” Luke said. “As a senior, I took AP anatomy and an EMT course at night. My interest really took off from there. I then majored in biology health professions at Northwestern College and attended medical school at the University of Iowa. After medical school, I moved to Indianapolis, Ind. to complete my residency.”
“As a pediatric emergency physician at MercyOne, I help provide, direct and improve the care of children who are sick or injured,” Luke added. “Our team is always looking at ways to improve the care of our patients and pushing our boundaries so we can stay at the cutting edge of medicine.”
