Our Western Iowa Story
MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center
In 1890, Mother Mary Agatha Murphy, a native of Ireland and a Sisters of Mercy, was invited by Sioux City civic leaders to establish a hospital that was not associated with city government. She purchased a home from John Pierce on the corner of 28th and Jennings and treated the first patient there in May.
In January 1977, the city's two Catholic hospitals announced that they would merge and form one institution, Marian Health Center, now known as MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center. Two years later groundbreaking ceremonies were held for a new $28 million hospital, the present site of MercyOne Siouxland.
MercyOne Primghar Medical Center
In 1914, the Ward Memorial Hospital, now known as MercyOne Primghar Medical Center, was built. The city of Primghar purchased the hospital in 1945 naming it Baum Harmon Memorial Hospital.
In 2000 Mercy Medical Center -Sioux City, now known as MercyOne, purchased the hospital and strengthen the services provided to western Iowa communities.
