(source: National Diabetes Prevention Program | Diabetes | CDC)

This lifestyle group program uses an evidence-based curriculum to help you develop the skills you need to create healthy habits that will last a lifetime,  including healthy eating, physical activity and reducing stress.

Benefits of the program can include:

  • Lowering your risk for Type 2 diabetes

  • Lowering your risk for heart attack and stroke

  • Feeling more energetic

  • Weight loss

  • Improving your overall well-being

Throughout the program, lifestyle coaches will create a non-judgmental environment for participants to learn  and grow to live their best life.

MercyOne has adopted the National Diabetes Prevention Program, a CDC-recognized lifestyle change program  proven to prevent or delay the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Research behind the Diabetes Prevention Program

The National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) lifestyle change program follows a yearlong evidence-based curriculum and is led by a trained lifestyle coach. Participants learn new skills, set goals and receive group  support. Those who lose 5% to 7% of their body weight and add 150 minutes of exercise per week can reduce their  risk of Type 2 diabetes by up to 58% (71% for people 60 or older).

Congress authorized the DPP in 2010 because of research demonstrating its potential to prevent or delay the onset  of Type 2 diabetes. A 10-year follow-up study shows participants were still one-third less likely to develop Type  2 diabetes a decade later than individuals who took a placebo. Those who did develop Type 2 diabetes delayed  the onset of the disease by about four years.

Lifestyle Coaching

CDC-recognized organizations offering the National Diabetes Prevention Program (National DPP) lifestyle change program must have lifestyle coaches who are trained to use a CDC-approved curriculum and who have the knowledge and skills to effectively deliver the program. The Lifestyle Coach’s ability to support participants, provide guidance, and help groups work together effectively is essential for a successful lifestyle change program.
