Areas of Impact: Neurosciences
March 31, 2021Providing the best possible care is important to Steven Adelman, D.O., neurologist at MercyOne Ruan Neurology Care.
Recently, MercyOne Des Moines received a new Electromyography (EMG) machine, which was funded through philanthropic support. This machine is used for electro-diagnostic procedures to evaluate parts of the peripheral nervous system.
Dr. Adelman explained that when most people think of neurology, they think or disorders of the central nervous system like stroke or multiple sclerosis (MS). The peripheral nervous system encompasses disorders of peripheral nerves and muscles, such as carpal tunnel or peripheral neuropathy.
“It is important to come up with a correct diagnosis and subsequent treatment for individuals with disorders of the peripheral nervous system,” said Dr. Adelman. “An EMG machine helps confirm a diagnosis so we can treat patients more effectively.”
In addition to his clinical hours at Ruan Neurology Care, Dr. Adelman is also a part of a neurology clinic at MercyOne Newton Medical Center. He explained that this newly funded EMG machine is compact, so he can transport it to Newton to provide electro-diagnostic services to his patients there, where it is most convenient for them.
“My interactions with patients are more complete; they are able to have their examination as well as their EMG,” said Dr. Adelman. “This machine has improved the quality of care and the access to care. For that I am grateful.”
Dr. Adelman is also a longtime supporter of MercyOne Des Moines and the neurosciences service line.
“I have been a neurologist at MercyOne for a long time, this is where I have spent my professional career and I take pride in it,” said Dr. Adelman. “I think if you take pride in something you want to improve it and give back to it in any way you can.”
The Neurosciences service line at MercyOne Des Moines is growing. Dr. Adelman hopes others will consider donating to support the neurosciences so they can continue transforming the health of our community.
“When we give to our own community we improve the community overall,” said Dr. Adelman. “That benefits our patients, physicians and staff; it is a win for everyone.”
