Skilled Care at MercyOne Elkader Medical Center
Skilled Rehabilitation is the term used for an extension of hospitalization for those who are being discharged from their hospital stay, however are not quite ready to go home. Patients qualify for skilled care when they need nursing services, or extended therapies. The care provided is generally covered by insurance.
There are many reasons why a patient may need skilled rehabilitation. It is our goal to accommodate those needs. We set an individualized care plan for you or your family member. We strive to meet personal goals. For many, that means having the ability to go back to living at home.
Our skilled care unit is open and staffed with physicians, nurses and ancillary care givers. Patients have the opportunity to receive treatment and therapy needed to transition back to home safely, while being able to be close to home to enjoy the comfort of family and friends.
Our services include:
- Skilled Nursing Care
- Physical Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Speech Therapy
- Dietician
- Laboratory Services
- Radiology Services
- Semi private rooms
- Examination by a medical on-call provider at least once per week, or more frequently as needed
- A nursing staff to patient ratio much lower than the average nursing home
Examples of skilled care patients include (not limited to):
Post-surgical Care - Patients needing care following a joint replacement or other orthopedic surgery.
Cardiac Recovery -Patients needing skilled activity programs following a heart attack or acute episode of congestive heart failure.
Neurological Disorders - Patients needing care to improve their level of functioning with continued therapy.
IV Antibiotic/Wound Management - Patients needing wound management/ sterile dressing changes or intravenous antibiotics.

The MercyOne Elkader Medical Center Therapy Team – Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy - Provides a variety of services to reach patient’s goals. These services include: daily activities assessments, post surgical rehabilitation, strength, balance and vertigo, pain management, wound treatment, Graston Technique, swallowing, video swallow, lymphedema, and home safety assessments.
