Early developmental intervention

Families who have a child with a developmental delay or disability can face many challenges. Our Early Developmental Intervention (EDI) program recognizes these challenges and has pediatric-trained professionals dedicated to help each child communicate, play, learn and live life to the fullest. EDI is a family-centered program. Parents and other family members are welcome in treatment sessions and are taught exercises and activities to work on with their child at home. Family support is important to help each child do their best.

Physical therapy

The primary focus of physical therapy is to help those with injuries or disabilities achieve their maximum functional level. With physical therapy people are often able to lead a more active
and independent lifestyle while also receiving information that may help prevent further injury. Physical therapists will work with you to identify your goals and individualize your treatment plan
and outcome. Physical therapy services include: increasing range of motion and strength, gait training, balance training, joint replacement therapy, pain management, pre-operative and post-operative care, aquatic therapy/arthritic management, work hardening and conditioning, wound care, orthotic/prosthetic training and women’s health issues such as incontinence and pelvic floor conditioning, wheelchair evaluations, vestibular care, Graston techniques. Physical therapy is available at all outpatient locations.

Speech therapy

Speech therapy is focused on helping individuals with communication skills to facilitate functional interaction throughout your daily life. In addition to communication skills, speech therapy plays an integral role in identifying safe diet and swallowing guidelines for individuals with dysphagia. A Speech-Language Pathologist will work with you to assess speech, language, cognition, and swallowing skills in order to develop an individualized treatment plan to meet your goals. Speech therapy is available at Cedar Falls Medical Center, Oelwein Medical Center and Waterloo Medical Center.

Women’s health

Research has proven physical therapy helps a variety of pelvic diagnoses, including incontinence or pelvic pain after childbirth, aging or illness. A multidisciplinary approach will be used with close contact among the physical therapist and primary care provider, OB/GYN, behavioral health provider and/or pain management to provide the best, most comprehensive care.

Patients may benefit from physical therapy if they are experiencing:

  • Accidental leakage of urine when coughing, sneezing or laughing
  • The need to urinate frequently or the sudden, uncontrollable urge to urinate
  • Pain in pelvic region
  • Organ prolapse
  • Pre- and post-partum related issues including back pain, diastasis recti and sciatica
  • Scar tissue concerns

The first visit with a pelvic floor physical therapist will be an evaluation of your current issues. This will include a thorough review of your medical history and questions about your eating, drinking, voiding, and sexual habits as they relate to your symptoms. Your posture, breathing technique, hip mobility, and strength of abdominal and pelvic floor muscles will be assessed for weakness, tightness, or strain. This may include an external as well as an internal exam. For questions or to schedule an appointment, please call 319-272-7200.
