What is Neurosurgery?

Neurosurgery is surgery performed on the nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord. At MercyOne, we also offer:

  • Deep brain stimulation (DBS) program which is shown to greatly increase the quality of life for those with movement disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia and OCD.
  • Minimally-invasive spine surgery.

Who is a candidate for Neurosurgery?

Our goal is for you to receive advantageous therapies sooner and to experience relief of your symptoms. You may need to see other specialties before, during or after neurosurgery such as physical therapy, pain management or physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Neurosurgery starts with your primary care provider. It’s recommended you consult with your primary care provider if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. Neurosurgery may be an option for people who have:

  • Axial symptoms (pain in the back, neck and shoulders) due to instability or fractures. Generally, axial symptoms not due to instability or fractures are better served by physical therapy and pain management, or a physical medicine and rehabilitation evaluation.
  • Radiculopathy (pinching of nerves, often resulting in pain, weakness or numbness) that is still present after utilizing a triple concurrent regimen of physical therapy, epidural steroid injection and gabapentin. Typically, four to six weeks of physical therapy is advised. If you have exhausted these measures without relief of symptoms, a referral to neurosurgery is recommended.
  • Cord compression presents with new motor deficits (weakness, gait disturbance) or new loss of bowel/bladder due to cord compression need to be seen by neurosurgery as soon as the problem is evident. These cases are considered more urgent, so please call one of our locations right away.
