Prevention/Screening
Breast self-exams, clinical breast exams and mammograms are all important factors in early detection of breast health issues. The first step to good breast health is being educated and self-aware of your breasts on a monthly basis. Mammography continues to be the single best tool for breast cancer screening. The American Cancer Society, with support from several other medical societies, recommends screening mammograms to start at age 40, yearly or every other year, depending on personal risk for breast cancer. Even if you are not experiencing any symptoms of breast cancer, doctors still recommend getting screened as it may detect cancer in its earliest stages before symptoms are present. Schedule a visit with one of our locations below:
Cervical cancer found at an early stage is usually easier to treat. There are three main ways to screen for cervical cancer:
- The human papillomavirus (HPV) test checks cells for infection that can cause cervical cancer.
- The Pap test can find precancerous cells and cervical cancer cells.
- A HPV/Pap co-test uses an HPV test and Pap test together to check for both high-risk HPV and cervical cell changes.
The USPSTF (United States Preventative Services Task Force) recommends getting your first Pap test at age 21, followed by Pap testing every 3 years or a HPV test every 5 years. If you are over 65, check with your primary care provider to see if you still need to get tested.
Colorectal cancer is the 3rd most common cancer in the US, and is the 2nd leading cause of cancer death. It is estimated that 60% of those deaths could have been prevented with a screening. The American College of Gastroenterology recommends screenings every 10 years for people over the age of 45. Before undergoing any colorectal cancer screening test, you should consult with your provider to determine the right test for you. There are several different colorectal cancer screening options available, and your provider will recommend the option he or she thinks is best for you, based on your medical history. Common colorectal cancer screening options include:
- Stool DNA Test
- Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
- Colonoscopy
If you have any questions or concerns regarding screening for colorectal cancer, please speak with your primary care provider.
Medicare, Medicaid and most health insurance companies cover the cost of lung cancer screening for those who meet the specified guidelines. Check with your health insurance provider to be sure a lung cancer screening is covered under your plan. You are eligible for lung cancer screening if you meet these guidelines:
- Age 50-77
- Average 20 pack/year smoking history (number of years smoked multiplied by number of packs smoked per day)
- Current smoker or have quit within the last 15 years.
- No current symptoms of lung cancer
- Have a CT order from your provider.
Are you at risk for lung cancer? Take our quiz to find out if you are eligible for a lung cancer screening.
Detecting prostate cancer in its early stages, when it’s easier to treat, leads to more positive outcomes. Although there are no standard or routine screening tests for prostate cancer, most prostate cancer is found in men over age 55.
The two main forms of screening include:
- Digital rectal exam (DRE)
- Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding screening for prostate cancer, please speak with your primary care provider.
