Pharmacy Residency, Teaching Opportunities
Over the course of the residency year, each resident has the opportunity to prepare a number of formal and informal presentations on various pharmacotherapy topics for the department of pharmacy, and hospital and/or health system. Didactic responsibilities are coordinated with Drake University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences (CPHS) in conjunction with pharmacy faculty members. Additional teaching and precepting opportunities can be arranged depending on residents’ interests.
- Teaching certificate through Drake University CPHS (certificate requirements):
- Attend > 7 of the planned Teaching and Learning Certificate (TLC) held throughout the year
- Facilitate at least one didactic teaching experience in the Drake University PharmD curriculum
- Participate in the precepting of at least one pharmacy learner
- Submit an electronic teaching portfolio
- Pharmacy Grand Rounds – provide CE accredited presentations to pharmacy staff and students during the monthly conference time
- Two presentations: 45-60 minute presentation focused on a clinical controversy, guideline update (national or institutional), or pharmacotherapy review
- Two journal Clubs: 20-25 minute presentation critiquing a recent piece of literature.
- Additional PGY-2 Emergency Medicine specific requirements:
- ED nurse education – teach one 4-hour emergency medicine & protocols class for ED nurses
- ED provider education – facilitate education and updates at provider meetings as assigned throughout the year
